Job 12:1–6, 13–25; Acts 11:19–30; John 8:21–32
As Jesus taught in the temple, many heard his words and were amazed. Some Pharisees, however, were not so pleased with Jesus’ teaching. They often found themselves confronted by Christ’s words and had to face the fact that they did not live up to God’s expectations. Instead of a prophetic voice concerning their need to repent and return to obedience, these Pharisees took exception and tried to trap Jesus with their trick questions so they could point out the faultiness of his teaching. Time and again they would ask Jesus, “Who are you?” hoping he would claim to be one with God. Yet, Jesus’ words and his works were always true and they clearly pointed to his identity as the Christ.
We continue to live in a world which questions the authority and identity of Jesus. The gospel message of God’s grace and a disciple’s love and service toward neighbor is counter to the selfish worldview brought about through sin. Still, many ask, “Who is Jesus?” The answer remains the same as always. Jesus is the Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Through him only is there forgiveness and eternal life.
