Today’s readings: Job 29:1, 31:24–30; Acts 15:12–21; John 11:30–44

Sometimes on our Christian journey, we feel as if we are slowly walking to our deaths. We starve to hear the beckoning voice of Christ. The story of Lazarus should be a constant reminder that we should take courage in knowing that we have been called to life by the one who took death head-on for us to live. When Martha and all the onlookers gathered around Lazarus’ tomb, they felt all alone—deserted. The path set before them was skewed and out of focus, just as our paths are sometimes. However, when Jesus speaks, the chaos of the world ceases and clarity is gained.

“Lazarus, come out,” was spoken with authority by Jesus. This authority of proclamation has also been spoken to us in our baptism. We were called out of the depths of sin and despair, to the light that has no end, and clarity that passes all uncertainty. Just as the burial clothes were unwrapped for Lazarus’ body to show life, we too have been unwrapped and washed clean by the power of Christ’s blood. We, too, should speak with authority to those who feel all alone on this journey, and call them into life by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me today to hear your Son’s voice that calls me from the grave of sin, death, and the devil, wrapping me in your love and grace. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Joshua Morgan, Pastor at Advent Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain, NC.
