It sometimes seems, whether in town or church, that we would rather have worthless fellows rule over us. Either one or 70, it makes no difference, whichever gives us the most and requires of us the least. Just make sure the ruler is handsome, well-spoken, and popular.
The ways of God require more, and often with less. God’s leaders are sometimes common and uneducated but they are full of the Spirit. As such, they speak with passion and lead from the Word of God. They are unafraid, only able to speak of what they have seen and heard in Scripture. Oh, that such leadership would be sought for church pulpits and councils, or at least that we might pray God to turn watery councils into fine wine.
Imagine leadership that turns to Jesus instead of to business sense. Can you conceive of a council that leads in the Spirit, confidently seeking Jesus in times of need, depending upon his Word to guide their decisions for a congregation?
Turn to Jesus in prayer; ask him to do a miracle at your church. May well-worn Bibles accompany the newest edition of Robert’s Rules of Order at the table where your Council gathers.
Prayer: Change our water into wine, Lord Jesus, that your Church may go forth in the power of your Spirit. Amen.
