Today’s readings: 2 Samuel 23:13-17b; 2 John 1-13; John 2:1-11

The signs of the Messiah were outlined in Jewish tradition. One of those signs was abundance. As Isaiah proclaimed: “The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; a banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, and refined, aged wine” (Isa 25:6). Jesus made a lavish abundance of wine during the wedding feast at Cana. Even if you estimate on the low side, Jesus’ miracle produced at least 120 gallons of wonderful wine. A wine so fine that the supervisor of the feast had to ask the bridegroom why he had waited so long to serve the best.

We should always give our very best to those we are inviting to become disciples of Jesus Christ. Discipleship requires our most loving behavior and most fervent prayers for those we are inviting. Discipleship carries an enormous responsibility regarding the way we behave in the presence of “non” and “new” believers. Our attitudes and words carry tremendous weight with those around us who are watching and waiting to see what we will do.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me, the one you love, the gift of your Spirit. Amen.
