Today’s readings: 2 Kings 17:24-41; 1 Corinthians 7:25-31; Matthew 6:25-34

In the 1963 film, “Lilies of the Field,” Homer Smith (played by actor Sidney Poitier) who is an itinerant handyman and jack-of-all-trades stops at a farm in the desert where he meets a group of eastern European nuns. The next day, Smith tries to persuade the mother superior to pay him for the work he has done for them. The leader, Mother Maria, responds by asking him to read a verse from our Gospel for today: Matthew 6:28-29.

These words from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount remind us that life is more than money, or possessions, or even our personal comfort. Jesus says that all we really need to do is rely on God’s love and care. Our Lord tells us that we cannot do anything to add any value to our life by being anxious about anything. He is telling you and me that we only need to be about our Heavenly Father’s business.

Life is loud and competes for our attention in ways that can drown out the call of God on our lives. But be reassured that the Lord will supply what you and I need if we can trust his promises. This is most certainly true!

Prayer: Father God, thank you for giving me the freedom to do your will and not worry about tomorrow. Amen.
