Today’s readings: Ezekiel 4:1-17; Hebrews 6:1-12; Luke 9:51-62

As you enter the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia, you encounter a giant statue of an infantryman named Iron Mike. The size and detail of Iron Mike is impressive indeed, however, the message conveyed at the base of the statue says all one needs to know about the Army infantry. “Follow Me” is his message to all. This is the cry of the infantryman going into battle, and just like Iron Mike, a good solider never looks back from his duty no-matter the cost.

In the same manner, Christ calls us to follow him regardless of the cost. In our text we see several examples of folks with good intentions of following Jesus, but they let life and circumstance keep them from true discipleship. Following Christ is not done out of convenience or as an elective of sorts, as seems to be prevalent today. The call of Jesus is one of dedication and selfless sacrifice and cannot be fulfilled with half-heartedness or indecision, but must be the most important thing in one’s life.

Prayer: Father, help us to all to be totally dedicated to following your Son Jesus. Amen.
