Today’s readings: Ezekiel 1:28–3:3; Hebrews 4:14–5:6; Luke 9:28-36

In the Old Testament reading, we find Ezekiel in exile with the people. As a priest, he was called by God to serve as his intermediary; he was called to be God’s voice. As we see in our reading, God does not call us to action without equipping us for his service; he does not leave us to our own devices; he gives us what we need. In the case of Ezekiel, God gave him his word. But this also meant Ezekiel had to listen: “But for you, Son of man, hear what I say to you.” Second, it meant Ezekiel had to be willing to respond: “Be not rebellious like the rebellious house…” Third, Ezekiel had to be open to God’s message: “Open your mouth and eat what I give you.”

As those called as God’s witnesses, we too must be open to and willing to listen to God’s call. We must be ready to digest, to take in and incorporate God’s message into our own lives so that we can in turn share God’s message to the rebellious world around us. If we are open and willing, God’s word will be for us as “sweet as honey.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to be open and ready to respond to your call and equip us for your service today, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
