Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 17:31-49; Acts 11:1-18; Mark 1:14-28

In 1 Samuel, we find a favorite Bible story for many about David and Goliath — a young boy takes on a giant of a warrior and prevails. We often hear this story related to an ominous challenge overcome by a brave young Christian. As we read through this story, it becomes evident that David had established his trust in God very early on in his life, as he noted the Lord had delivered him from the paws of a lion and a bear while defending his father’s sheep. David’s faith carried him from being a responsible shepherd to becoming the greatest king in Israel.

We have a Savior who has gone even further to save his sheep. He walked through the valley of the shadow of death and overcome it for you. He knew his Father in heaven would guide him through every challenge to an ideal outcome for the sake of his flock. Jesus Christ is the shepherd and we are the beloved sheep of his fold. Jesus has faced all the giant challenges of this life, and has overcome them — for us. Trust in Jesus as your Good Shepherd and discover where he leads you.

Prayer: Good Shepherd, lead us with assured spirits to the place where peaceful waters flow in your glorious eternal pasture. Amen.
