Today’s readings: 1 Samuel 24:1-22; Acts 13:44-52; Mark 4:1-20

I would venture to say that all of us have been wronged at one time or another. Moreover, most of us have had opportunity to strike the perpetrator back and return the harm done to us. However, as God’s people we are not to return evil for evil. Instead we are called to do the unthinkable, in terms of worldly standards, by loving, helping, and praying for those who cause us harm.

It sounds impossible, and it is impossible for we fleshly creatures—but not for God. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” The things that seem out of reach for us and so overwhelming are only possible through God.

In the story of Saul and David we see this being played out. David had been terrorized by Saul. Saul, seeing the proverbial handwriting on the wall, chose a course of action of earthly revenge and retribution. In other words, he did as the world dictates. In stark juxtaposition, David does the impossible for a human being, but what is ever possible for one led by God. He shows mercy to his enemy.

Prayer: Father, help us to follow you in all things. Amen.
