Today’s readings: Song of Solomon 1:1-3, 9-11, 15- 16a; 2:1-3a; 2 Corinthians 12:1-10; Luke 19:28-40

We tend not to like compliments, but only because we like them so much and are afraid it will show. Few manage them well. “Why, thank you,” we reply casually, when what we want to do is to throw our arms around the one who complimented us.

It just shows how unfit we still are for heaven with its accolades galore. The Song of Solomon is an earthly love poem, but it’s also what we would overhear eavesdropping at the door of eternity. People have been tripping over my name all my life but, introduced in heaven, I may hear them say: “Blobaum? Ah,

your name is perfume poured out…” (1:3).

Truthfulness will take some getting used to. At first, we will gush repetitively:

“Ah, you are beautiful, my love;
ah, you are beautiful;
your eyes are doves” (1:15).

And she will sweetly stammer:

“Ah, you are beautiful, my beloved,
truly lovely” (1:16a).

We will get the hang of it. We will say what we feel for once. Paul says: “It is good to be made much of for a good purpose at all times…” (Gal 4:18). We will love and be loved with every breath.

Prayer: Your love, O Christ, is new every morning. Amen.

Today’s devotion was written by Gary Blobaum, Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Sumter, SC.
